Key Takeaways:

  • A vaginal yeast infection causes irritation, discharge, and intense itching.
  • It is also known as vaginal candidiasis and affects approximately three out of four women during their lifetime.
  • Vaginal yeast infections are not considered sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
  • The fungus candida albicans is the main cause of vaginal yeast infections.
  • Besides OTC antifungal vaginal creams, there are home remedies for treating your vaginal yeast infection, and HPFY has what you need, including vital information.

Yeast is a type of fungus, and candida albicans is a specific type that is the prime culprit in vaginal yeast infections. The overgrowth of the candida albicans can cause significant discomfort in women. Yes, yeast does occur naturally in the vagina, but in certain situations, this balance can get out of whack, leading to a vaginal yeast infection. So, how do you tackle this uncomfortable situation? Hopefully, I can give you some insight into some natural home remedies for vaginal yeast infections.

Yes, over-the-counter antifungal creams can be used to treat vaginal yeast infections, but there are home remedies and preventions that can help you battle this issue. There are a multitude of home remedies for vaginal infection, which includes:

1. Greek Yogurt

I'm sure you’ve heard of probiotics, and yogurt contains live bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, that promotes a healthy vaginal environment. A study in 2015 published in the National Library of Medicine found that a vaginal cream mixture of plain yogurt & bee honey improved symptoms of vaginal yeast infections. This can be eaten for probiotic benefits and applied topically.

2. Coconut Oil

An antimicrobial agent, coconut oil dissolved in water can help those who suffer from frequent, recurring vaginal yeast infections. Applying coconut oil topically may keep your bacterial landscape in check. Be sure to use pure, organic coconut oil on your sensitive skin.

3. Boric Acid

Vaginal suppositories of boric acid can be used in combination with medication for vaginal yeast infection. Boric acid is a powerful antiseptic but should be used in small amounts since larger amounts can cause issues.

4. Oil of Oregano

The extract of oregano (not the stuff in the grocery store or the essential oils) can ease symptoms of a yeast infection. Oil of oregano may prove effective in altering the growth of candida albicans, the fungus responsible for vaginal yeast infections.

5. Probiotic Suppositories and Supplements

It’s been shown that probiotics can restore the bacteria/yeast balance in your body. Oral probiotics cannot only help your digestive tract but your vaginal flora as well. Since oral supplements can take time to reach full effect, the use of vaginal suppositories can get results quicker. Some evidence suggests that suppositories can also help treat bacterial vaginosis.

6. Tea Tree Oil

Prized for its antifungal properties, tea tree oil may have the ability to kill a range of yeast and fungi, including candida albicans. This can be used in vaginal suppository form or 3-5 drops of tree oil mixed with 1 ounce of warm coconut oil applied to a tampon. Obviously, it’s important to change the tampon regularly!!

7. Garlic

A vaginal cream containing garlic and thyme was shown to be as effective as clotrimazole vaginal cream in treating yeast infections. Pure garlic is known for its antifungal and antibiotic properties.

8. Apple Cider Vinegar

This vaginal yeast infection treatment involves a bath including apple cider vinegar. Simply add ½ cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm bathtub and soak for 20 minutes. The acidic component of the vinegar can eliminate harmful microorganisms such as yeast.

9. Hydrogen Peroxide

Lactobacillus bacteria in your vagina produce hydrogen peroxide naturally as part of biological activity. Adding it to your bath or simply diluting it in water before applying it to sensitive skin may help with yeast growing on your genitals. However, avoid douching with hydrogen peroxide and never use hydrogen peroxide internally.

10. Vitamin E

This can be used for certain types of vaginal inflammation and can even reduce inflammation caused by candida albicans. Vitamin E suppositories or vitamin E oil applied to your vulva can help soothe the itching, burning, and inflammation associated with vaginal yeast infections.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Home remedies can help resolve many cases of vaginal yeast infections, but they are not effective in all instances. Treatment for vaginal yeast infections typically takes up to seven days. If this is your first vaginal infection or you’re not sure whether you have a yeast infection, you should see your doctor or OB/GYN. Also, if a home remedy or OTC cream doesn’t clear the problem, you should consult your physician as soon as possible, especially if your yeast infection is severe or you develop fissures or sores. Be sure to see your doctor if you develop any other symptoms.
