Breathe Deep!! Choosing Your Nebulizer

Breathe Deep!! Choosing Your Nebulizer
Kevin Cleary

Sometimes when we have a hard time breathing our doctors may prescribe us medication to help open our airways. Congestion in our chests or lungs can be caused by many different reasons, such as bronchitis, asthma, or even allergies. While these medications your doctor prescribes can be taken orally, this means being absorbed into the bloodstream and delivering the medicine to where it’s needed. This takes time, so the use of a nebulizer to deliver this medicine directly to your airways and lungs can be more effective.

Who needs Nebulizers?

As it turns out, breathing is relatively important to us humans. When our breathing becomes compromised, even by the slightest amount, it can be extremely uncomfortable. Usually, our bodies deal with some kind of respiratory malady by coughing, but sometimes there can be reasons that require medication. Some of the reasons for nebulizers listed at healthguidance.org include asthma, emphysema, sinusitis, or even the flu. These types of ailments all affect our airways making it difficult to get a full breath or feel like pressure on our chests.

How Does a Nebulizer Work?

The medication a doctor may prescribe for your breathing ailment may be in liquid form. As webmd.com points out, a nebulizer changes this medication from a liquid form into a mist so that it may be easily inhaled directly into the lungs. By using a nebulizer, it easily delivers medication directly to the affected area. A nebulizer uses compressed air that is pressed through the liquid medicine creating an aerosol that is easily inhaled, making breathing the only skill needed.

By using either a mouthpiece or a mask, the user does not have to coordinate pressing and inhaling at the same time as an asthma inhaler. Once the mist begins just breathe normally and the proper dosage of medication is administered directly into your lungs. In order to deliver this medication, a nebulizer mouthpiece is necessary and is available in either a disposable or reusable style. Disposable nebulizers can be used 3-4 times before needing to be discarded, while a reusable nebulizer can be used for up to six months. Examples of disposable and reusable nebulizers are:

  • Devilbiss VixOne Disposable Nebulizer  - It has a universal connector to accommodate both adult and adolescent masks.
  • Respironics Sidestream Reusable Nebulizer - It can be used for up to six months and provides an additional flow of up to 16 lpm above compressor output, therefore, improving treatment time.

Both of these require careful cleaning for multiple uses and should be air-dried in order to avoid any possible contaminants (such as lint) from being inhaled as well as any possible negative effects on the medicine being delivered. A small child may balk at the idea of wearing a mask. If so, a nebulizer can still be effective by holding the mouthpiece directly under their nose so that when they inhale the medicated aerosol is breathed in directly.

Once the correct dosage of medication has been administered, the aerosol mist will disappear and the respiratory session is over. Below is a diagram of an example of a nebulizer mouthpiece:
