Features of Diathermy Treatment
- Clear Touch Screen LCD: Allows the operator to select an option by simply touching the screen to guide them through the set-up process while providing information regarding treatment settings during attended procedures.
- Thermal Dosimetry: Allows the operator to set up a treatment using the six treatment dosages (the four standard diathermy dosages, in addition to two proprietary dosages) to provide outputs capable of producing thermal effects. Higher dosages result in greater thermal effects in the tissue.
- Scientific Dosage Control (S.D.C.):The technology incorporated into the TheraTouch DX2 creates tighter titration of shortwave output, allowing for the additional proprietary dosimetry protocols, which provide increased thermal effect and decreased patient discomfort risk.
- Quick Link Indications:The TheraTouch DX2 device incorporates a unique Quick Link Indications sub-menu, allowing the user to select specific clinical indications to apply the most common therapy for the selected indicators. All underlying parameters can be adjusted and saved to Favorite Protocols if desired.
- Favorite Protocols:Favorite protocols allow the operator to set, change, and save the parameters of any treatment from recalling at a later time easily. Up to 100 Favorite Protocols can be saved.
- High-Efficiency Automatic Tuning (H.E.A.T.): Shortwave Diathermy device has been programmed to automatically regulate the power between the monoxide drum and the patient to maximize tissue heating efficiency.

Scientific Dosage Control for Shortwave Diathermy
With Diathermy - TheraTouch DX2 tighter titration, two additional dosimetry options are now available. Traditional diathermy units provide a dosimetric scale categorized by four doses:
- DOSE I - Subthermal
- DOSE II - Mild Heat
- DOSE III - Low Heat
- DOSE IV - Vigorous Heat
The unique parameters Richmar&rsquo's exclusive Scientific Dosage Control (SDC) allow for an increased thermal effect with decreased risk. The heating effect from Dose IV can be uncomfortable due to decreased muscle mass and the thinness of the skin, such as in geriatric patients. To better meet the needs of these patients, SDC provides two additional increments of heating to Dose III:
- DOSE III SDC M - Moderate Heat
- DOSE III SDC H - High Heat
FAQs About Diathermy Treatment
What is shortwave diathermy used for?
Shortwave diathermy uses high-frequency electromagnetic energy to generate heat. It may be applied in pulsed or continuous energy waves. It has been used to treat pain from kidney stones and pelvic inflammatory disease. It's commonly used for conditions that cause pain and muscle spasms.
What is a contraindication for short wave diathermy?
SWD is contraindicated in areas with metal implants and in patients with pacemakers or implanted deep brain stimulators.
What are the risks of diathermy?
Diathermy emissions can contain numerous toxic gases, particles, and vapors and are usually invisible to the naked eye. Their inhalation can adversely affect surgeons and theatre staff's respiratory systems.
How long does diathermy usually last?
Treatments usually last between five and 10 minutes.
Why is shortwave diathermy machine used in surgery?
Diathermy is the use of high-frequency alternate polarity radio-wave electrical current to cut or coagulate tissue during surgery. It allows for precise incisions to be made with limited blood loss and is now used in nearly all surgical disciplines.
