Smiths Medical ViaValve Peripheral IV Catheter help prevent blood contamination and exposure by controlling blood flow. During the initial venipuncture, a special valve inside the catheter hub prevents blood flow from the patient's vein. Maintaining a clean access site reduces the risk of bloodborne pathogens being transferred from the patient to the caregiver via dirty gloves, clothing, bedding, and dressings. Once in the patient's vein, the Luer fitting of an infusion line is attached to the catheter valve, which opens the valve and allows unfettered flow. Its safety guard encircles the retracted introducer needle and emits a "click" to signal that the needle has been confined for handling and disposal.
