What to buy with Rolyan Thumb Spica Orthosis

How to apply Hand Based Thumb Splint?

  1. Heat splint blank in water heated to approximately 160°F (70°C) until pliable. (Refer to the instructions for Rolyan splinting materials for information about working with specific splinting materials.
  2. Remove from heat pan and place on a towel on a flat surface. Blot excess water.
  3. If possible, place patient’s hand in supination to achieve a gravity-assisted position. Place splint blank on the volar (For dorsal application, place the patient’s hand in pronation and place the splint blank on the dorsal surface.)
  4. Mold the splint blank around the thumb, overlapping the material
  5. Mold the ulnar border of the splint over the dorsum of the hand
  6. The thumb piece can be left free to accommodate fluctuation in edema or bonded to the splint base as follows:
    • If the splinting material is coated to prevent accidental bonding, remove the coating by scraping the surface or brushing it with an acetone material
    • The best bond can be achieved by dry heating the material (such as with a heat gun)
    • While still warm, place the pieces together carefully - they will bond instantly
  7. The splint can be trimmed and the edges flared if necessary
  8. Secure a volar splint with a dorsal strap; secure a dorsal splint with a palmar strap

How to care and clean Hand Based Custom Thumb Splint?

  • The splint will lose its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
  • The splint may be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water. The straps may be washed with soap and water, but the adhesive portion should not be moistened. The splint and straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly before reapplication of the splint.

Precautions:

  • These splints are to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which they are prescribed.
