The QiVi Female External Urine Management Device (FEC) is created to sit comfortably over the female anatomy. It is flexible in two directions—sideways and front-to-back, making it suitable for various patients. By being external, it avoids causing harm to the labia, and its pliable nature ensures a comfortable fit between the patient's legs. The unique adhesive design of QiVi accommodates sensitive areas and areas with hair follicles. It utilizes proprietary polymers to guide fluid to a specific location on the device, and two suction tubes then transfer the fluid to an external canister. QiVi can be used at home with QiVi–AUM to help sleep better at night and prevent falls.

How to use the Qivi FEC Device?

1. Preparation of Device

  • In addition, the QiVi suction canister/bag and associated tubing will be required
  • Wear gloves before handling the patient
  • Unpack the device and set up a station near the patient
  • Connect the canister to wall suction and set pressure at a minimum of 40mmHg of continuous suction. Connect the tube to the canister

2. Preparation of Patient

  • Position the patient in a supine position with legs slightly spread apart
  • Position yourself such that the patient’s urogenital region is clearly visible and direct access is possible
  • Perform perineal care and assess skin integrity (document per institutional protocol)
  • It is advisable to trim pubic hair to improve product performance


 

3. Placement of Device

  • Hold the device upright with the cranial tube on top
  • Align the distal end at the perineum and place the device taut over the labia with the collection chamber contouring the urethral opening
  • While holding the device in place, use the peel tabs to remove the adhesive liner and place the adhesive patch at the suprapubic region
  • With the distal end connected to the suction canister, connect the suction tube with the QiVi device. Ensure all connections are secure
  • Return the patient to a natural position. Ensure the suction tube is not obstructed by the patient's load

4. Maintenance of Device

  • Perform skin assessment periodically as per institutional protocol
  • Ensure the tube is connected at all times while the device is in use
  • Assess the device periodically to ensure proper placement, particularly after turning or repositioning the patient
  • Replace the device every 12 to 24 hours. Dispose of the device as per institutional protocol
  • Replace the tube and empty and/or replace the suction canister as per institutional protocol

5. Removal of Device

  • Position the patient in a supine position with legs slightly spread apart
  • Position yourself such that the patient’s urogenital region is clearly visible and direct access is possible
  • Starting from the proximal end, gently peel the adhesive patch and remove the device
  • Disconnect the device from the suction tube and discard the device as per institutional protocol
  • Assess skin integrity and perform perineal care if required

Indication for use

The QiVi device is designed for non-invasive urine management in non-ambulatory females and those with limited mobility to manage urine non-invasively. It collects and diverts urine away from the patient's body.

Warnings

  • Do not use QiVi with other products that interfere with its function or restrict fluid/airflow
  • Prepare skin before use; apply and remove gently to prevent potential skin injury
  • Stop use if allergic reaction occurs
  • After use, it may be a potential biohazard; dispose of it in accordance with your institutional protocol

Precautions

Not recommended for patients who are:

  1. Agitation, restlessness, or uncooperativeness leading to the potential removal of the product in use
  2. Skin irritation or breakdown at the application site
  3. Inability to use tampons due to experiencing moderate to heavy menstruation
  4. Frequent episodes of bowel incontinence without a fecal management system in place
  • Barrier cream can hinder device function
  • Proceed with caution after recent surgery on the external urogenital area
  • Assess skin integrity & perform perineal care before placement
  • Maintain suction until QiVi is fully removed to prevent urine backflow

Contraindications

  • Have urinary retention
  • Have an allergy to adhesive or any other device material
  • Have male anatomy
  • Perineum/suprapubic skin breakage with open lesions, irritations, ulcers, and inflammation
