Temperature Sensing Foley Catheter Benefits
- Improving Patient Outcomes In the OR
- Comply with SCIP-Inf-10 by monitoring the patients core temperature with an integrated thermistor
- Maintaining normothermia with the aid of temperature sensing catheters may help avoid SSIs, cardiac events, bleeding, longer recovery times and longer drug onsets and durations
- Improving Patient Outcomes In Therapeutic Hypothermia
- In Therapeutic Hypothermia the greatest patient benefit often occurs within a narrow temperature range
- Bladder temperature probes enable continuous monitoring and feedback in conjunction with hypothermia devices
- Other techniques, including intermittent tympanic temperature measurements, are less reliable
- Improving Patient Outcomes In the ICU
- The ability to use a temperature sensing catheter to measure both urine output and continuous body temperature is a distinct advantage, which may eliminate the need to measure temperature at other sites

What is Urinary Tract Infection?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, bladder, ureters (tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder), and urethra (the tube through which urine exits the body). UTIs are most commonly caused by bacteria, but they can also be caused by viruses or fungi.
Urinary tract infection Causes:
- It occur when bacteria gets into your bladder or kidneys, causing symptoms such as painful urination, more frequent urination, lower abdominal pain or pressure, blood in your urine, or fever
- When a catheter is passed through the urethra, it can pick up bacteria from the skin and push it into the bladder where it can grow and multiply, especially if the urine remains in the bladder for a prolonged amount of time
Preventive Measures for Urinary Tract Infection
Although it is very difficult to prevent all urinary tract infections , a large number can be avoided by practicing good preventive measures
- Hand hygiene remains the first and most important preventive measure
- Be diligent about cleaning your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaner before and after catheter insertion
- Empty your bladder at least once every six hours
- Drink enough fluids to keep the urine volume between 300-400 ml (about 1-1/2 cups) at each catheterization
- Avoid bubble baths
- If you develop a fever (temperature over 100 degrees F) and have other symptoms of a urinary tract infection, contact your healthcare provider. Be prepared with information such as your temperature, current symptoms, whether you have any allergies to antibiotics, and which antibiotics have worked well in the past
