What to buy with Drive Blue Streak Portable Wheelchair

How to use Drive Blue Streak Bariatric Transport Chair?

Using Wheel Locks

  • Engage both wheel locks before getting in or out of the chair, leaning forward, or while in an elevator or wheelchair lift.
  • Proper adjustment of wheel lock is at least 1/8” when locked.
  • Locks are engaged by pushing the handle completely forward.
  • Adjustments to locks are made by loosening or tightening the nut on the carriage bolt.
  • Embed lock shoe at least 1/8” by sliding the clamp toward the rear wheel.
  • In contrast, the handle is engaged in the locked position. Tighten the nut and bolt to secure them in position.
  • Test for correct locking action before actual use.

Using Tires

  • Solid rubber tires need minimal maintenance but should be cleaned occasionally with a damp cloth.
  • Replace if tires become severely worn or cracking appears.

Using Front Casters

  • should be checked periodically and occasionally lubricated.
  • Lubricate by removing the fork and greasing the caster stem bearings.
  • Lubricate wheel bearings by removing the wheel from the fork.
  • Reassemble the fork and wheel by tightening the nuts until no play remains, but the wheels roll freely.
  • If the nut is too loose, the caster will shimmy; if too tight, the chair will be hard to steer.

Removal of swing-away footrests/leg rests

  • Release the lock by pushing on the front rigging lever.
  • Swingaway footrest/leg rest out and sideways.
  • Lift to remove.

Adjusting/Elevating Leg Rest

  • When adjusting the length of footrests or leg rests, the user should be sitting in a wheelchair with feet on the footplates. Loosen the bolt on the clamp around the support assembly. Raise or lower the footplate to the desired position that will provide maximum support for the thighs. Front rigging should not be so low that it causes uncomfortable pressure on the thighs at the front of the seat upholstery. The footrest should not be lower than 2-1/2” from the ground to ensure clearance.

Adjusting/Elevating Leg Rest

  • Lift the footplate on the leg rest assembly to the desired position. Release the leg rests assembly, and it will automatically lock into place. Push out on the leg rest lever and lower the footplate to the desired position.

Wheels

  • Large rear wheels should be inspected at least once a month to ensure proper tightness. If the wheel wobbles or is loose, release the lock nut and tighten the axle bolt slightly. Test for proper tightness by learning to chair to one side and spin the adjusted wheel.

How to care for Drive Wheelchair?

  • Wipe chrome parts with a clean, soft cloth at least once a week. All metal parts can be cleaned with auto wax or similar products. If exposed to moisture, dry immediately. Do not use an abrasive cleanser that will scratch the finish.

How to open the chair?

  • Open the wheelchair by tilting to one side and pushing down on the seat rail until it fully opened. To Close/Fold Chair
  • First, fold the foot plates to a vertical position. Grab a seat with both hands at the front and back edge and lift. Or, tilt the chair to one side and lift up on the seat rail.

Removable Arms

  • Remove arms by depressing the spring button and lifting arms out of the front and rear sockets.

Warnings:

  • Do not attempt to adjust or operate a wheelchair without reading all instructions in this manual carefully.
  • This wheelchair has not been approved as a seat that can be used within vehicles of any kind. Always transfer wheelchair user to a vehicle manufacturer-approved seat and use the safety restraints available.
  • Do not operate this wheelchair on roadways, streets or any surfaces with vehicular traffic.
  • Do not attempt to operate on inclines 10% or greater without proper assistance.
  • Be sure to engage the wheel locks when completely getting in and out of a wheelchair or when in an elevator or wheelchair lift.
  • The wheelchair should be on a smooth, stable, and level area with wheel locks engaged before transferring the user in or out of the wheelchair.
  • Do not adjust footrests lower than 2-1/2” from the floor. When getting in or out of the wheelchair, do not stand on or apply weight to footrests.
  • Before reaching or leaning forward, rotate the casters to the front of the wheelchair, and engage wheel locks to help prevent the wheelchair from tipping over.
  • Do not lean over or apply weight to the top of the wheelchair back. This can cause the wheelchair to tip over.
  • When trying to extend your arms over your back, only reach as far as your arm can extend without having to alter your seating position.
  • Do not stand in a wheelchair.
  • Do not use wheel locks to slow your descent down an incline.
  • Abruptly changing directions while going down an incline could cause instability or possible tipping over.
