What to buy with StatLock Stabilization Devices

How to use Stat Lock Catheter Securement Device?

How to apply bard StatLock PICC Plus?

  • Prep:
    • Cleanse around catheter insertion and outlined stabilization site with chlorhexidine solution, alcohol or as recommended by your healthcare provider. Extend to both sides to an area larger than where the anchor pad will be placed. Allow to dry completely.
    • Apply provided skin protectant to stabilization site. Extend to both sides to an area larger than where the anchor pad will be placed. Allow to dry completely (10 to 15 seconds) until the site is smooth to the touch. Skin protectant helps to further enhance the adherence and the holding power of the anchor pad to your skin.
  • Press:
    • Align the StatLock device anchor pad so blue directional arrows point toward catheter insertion site.
    • Sliding Posts (if the posts on the StatLock device retainer slide back and forth) - Place catheter wing hole over the first post, then slide stabilization device to capture the second post.
    • Fixed Posts (if the posts on the StatLock device retainer do not slide back and forth or do not move from side to side) - Place catheter wing holes over fixed posts.
    • Using thumbs support undersurface of anchor pad and catheter while closing retainer doors. This prevents from pushing down on the skin.
  • Peel and Place:
    • Hold the Stat Lock catheter anchor device securely as you peel away paper backing from anchor pad, one side at a time, then place on the skin.
    • Apply transparent dressing over catheter insertion site and/or StatLock device anchor pad as instructed by your healthcare provider.
    • Apply both provided dressing change labels.

How to remove StatLock PICC Plus Catheter Stabilization Device?

  • Dissolve:
    • Remove transparent dressing using "stretch technique". Apply alcohol on top of the plastic doors and edges/corners of the transparent dressing. With one edge on each side loosened, stretch in each direction by pulling the dressing horizontally across catheter to remove. Always start at the distal edge of dressing and work toward catheter to limit movement.
    • First, lift the edge of anchor pad using 3–4 alcohol pads by stacking together and squeezing alcohol onto skin and working under the edge of the pad. Then continue to stroke undersurface of the pad with alcohol to dissolve anchor pad away from the skin. Be sure to work underneath the pad and again squeeze the alcohol for easy removal. The pad should lift from the skin. Do not pull or force pad to remove.
  • Disengage:
    • Fold adhesive anchor pad underneath on both sides so it sticks to itself.
    • Stabilize catheter with a gloved finger while holding the StatLock device. Next, use the thumb of opposite hand to gently lift retainer door from behind while pressing down with the index finger as shown. Reposition hands and repeat process to open second retainer door.
    • Carefully remove PICC from the retainer.
    • Re-apply another StatLock PICC Plus stabilization device. Be sure to temporarily secure line by holding catheter with a sterile gloved finger or sterile adhesive foam strip per health care provider’s recommendations. OR
    • Discontinue line if recommended by health care provider

StatLock PICC Plus Instruction Manual

Warning and Precautions:

  • The StatLock PICC Plus stabilization device should be monitored daily and replaced if the pad is lifting, at least every 7 days.
  • The catheter insertion site should be treated per healthcare providers recommendations.
  • Alcohol and acetone may weaken the adhesive bond between the StatLock device pad and the skin. Care should be taken when using these solutions while performing catheter site care.
  • Do not use it where loss of adherence could occur, such as with a confused patient, unattended access device, diaphoretic or non-adherent skin, or when the access device is not monitored daily.
  • Observe universal blood and body fluid precautions and infection control procedures, during the application and removal.
  • Suture the StatLock stabilization device pad to skin if necessary or deemed necessary.
  • Minimize catheter manipulation during application and removal.
  • Remove oil and moisturizer from targeted skin area.
  • Orient the StatLock stabilization device so arrows point toward the catheter tip.
  • A luer-lock connector must be used to secure venous and arterial catheters.
  • Always apply the adhesive strip to central venous and arterial catheters at or near the insertion site when using a StatLock PICC Plus stabilization device.
  • This is a single-use device. Reuse/and or repackaging may create a risk of patient or user infection, compromise the structural integrity and/or essential material and design characteristics of the device, which may lead to device failure, and/or lead to injury, illness or death of the patent.
  • Do not re-sterilize. The sterility of the single-use device is not guaranteed following re-sterilization because of an indeterminable degree of potential pyrogenic or microbial contamination which may lead to infection complications. Re-sterilization may compromise the structural integrity, essential material and/or design characteristics and may lead to an unpredictable loss of functionality and/or device failure.
