How to properly use Enteral Syringe?
Filling The ENFit Syringe
- When an ENFit bottle cap does not fit the medication bottle or removing the current bottle adapter is impossible, an enteral medication straw fills the syringe.
- Connect the ENFit-compatible end of the medication straw to the syringe, and insert the straw into the medication bottle through the opening of the existing bottle adaptor or directly into the bottle mouth.
- Position the straw in the bottle and draw up the medication to the desired dose. When that is done, take the straw off the syringe and gently tap the straw to remove any medication on/in the straw.
- When using the ENFit medication straw, ensure no air bubbles are in the syringe. Air bubbles from the straw may fill the lower end of the syringe. Carefully tap or flick the syringe to remove the air bubble before removing it from the medication straw or the syringe to remove air bubbles.
Medication Administration Using ENFit Enteral Syringe
- Perform hand hygiene.
- Make sure that the enteral feeding tube or access device/extension set is ENFit-compatible
- Verify that the syringe moat is free from excess medication. If not, flick the end of the syringe to remove the excess amount
- Attach an ENFit syringe with the flush solution to the patient tube and administer the flush. Detach the syringe
- Attach the ENFit syringe containing the medication into the ENFit-compatible feeding tube port. Once secure, gently push the syringe plunger to transfer the medication into the enteral access site.
- After expelling the medication, detach the syringe and flush the medication port.
