What is a Transfer Board?

Transfer Board is an important part of patient transfer systems and is ideal for the safe handling of patients. It repositions patients with ease and without much effort. Patient transfer systems offer a safe transfer of a person from one place to another and, at the same time, allow the independence and dignity of the person being moved to be maintained. Slider Board comes in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes according to the needs of the patient. We at HPFY carry sliding boards from top-rated brands like Safetysure, Sammons Preston, BeasyTrans, and more.

Benefits of Sliding Boards For Patients

Types Of Transfer Assist Devices

  1. Patient Slider Sheets

Patient slider sheets are made of special fabrics with low-friction insides to facilitate smooth gliding over themselves. These sliding sheets may be flat or padded and are available in varying sizes and lengths. The patient may use them independently or with assistance from a caregiver. Patient slider sheets help move the patient up in bed, move from one side to the other side, and transfer them from one surface to another.

  2. Sliding Board

Patient slide boards come in wood or plastic and help transfer patients from wheelchairs, beds, chairs, or commodes. They can be used along with roller sheets or slide sheets and help reduce friction and bridge gaps when transferring patients from stretcher to bed and vice versa, generally between two horizontal surfaces. Patient transfer boards and sliding boards are meant to help those patients who can independently push themselves along by sliding along the board with a caregiver’s assistance. They help with transfers between bed and wheelchair, wheelchair and commode, chair and wheelchair, and wheelchair and car. These boards do not require manual lifting of the patient, thus keeping the caregiver safe from back strain or sprain. Independent patients may also use these boards to perform certain transfers without assistance. There are curved transfer boards that are designed for transfers around armrests that are fixed.

Tips for Safe Transfer of the Patient

  1. Sitting on the wheelchair slide board: At first, a caregiver would assist you in sitting on the slide board. For additional support, you can wear a transfer gait belt that lets caregivers support you more easily.
  2. Moving carefully and slowly on the board: After sitting securely on the board, move slowly and safely, and be careful about the movements while you transfer from the board.
  3. Protecting the skin and sitting in the correct position: Make sure your skin does not get pinched while moving on the sliding board. For that, you can use a sliding sheet that eases movement. Also, move across the board with proper positioning of your legs and feet, and never put your hands or fingers under the board.
  4. Transfer between surfaces of the same height: Moving between two surfaces that have the same height or a bit lower height helps in easy transfer and reduces the work for you and the caregiver.

How to use a Transfer Board?

Using Transfer Board for wheelchair users

Mostly, these boards are used for transfer between bed and wheelchair. You can follow the below-mentioned steps for a comfortable and safe transfer from bed to a wheelchair:

  1. Sit on the edge of the bed with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place the wheelchair very close to the bed and lock the wheels of the chair.
  3. Place one end of the board below your thigh. Leaning in the opposite direction from the board can make placing the board easier.
  4. Keep the other end of the board on the wheelchair seat.
  5. For easy movement on the board, use a fabric sheet and carefully move your body towards the second surface.
  6. Once completely settled on the wheelchair, you can remove the transfer board.

Using Slide Boards to move from a wheelchair into a car

  1. Take the help of the caregivers to assist you while moving into the car
  2. Before moving into the car, make sure that the car seat is moved as far back as possible so that you get enough space to move.
  3. Take the support of the door to sit comfortably.
  4. Place one leg at a time in the car.
  5. After proper positioning in the car seat, remove the board.
