Gauze pads are particularly advantageous for their non-adherent construction and conformability. This type of wound dressing conforms and clings to body contours and displays maximum absorbency powers. Gauze bandages are useful for dressing wounds, especially in cases where other fabrics might adhere to the burn or laceration. Gauze wraps are non-stick gauze used to pack a wound since they don't cause trauma to the wound site during dressing change. At HPFY, we have a wide range of gauze dressings and more from top brands like Mckesson, Medline Industries, and Cardinal Health, to name a few.

How do gauze pads work?

A gauze bandage is a medical fabric made from the fibers of cotton, polyester, rayon, or a combination. Gauze bandages protect the wound from bacterial infection and other contaminants while maintaining a moist wound environment to promote healing.

The McKesson Adhesive Sterile Square Island Dressing offers the convenience of an all-in-one dressing by combining an absorbent, non-adherent central pad surrounded by a breathable adhesive border. The non-adherent pad in the center is designed to avoid disrupting the wound bed upon removal.

The Covidien Xeroform Occlusive Petrolatum Gauze Dressing protects wounds and provides a moist wound healing environment. It clings and conforms to all body contours, making it suitable for use in deep and shallow wounds and compression therapy.

Features of gauze bandage

Gauze dressings are highly versatile and available in varying shapes and sizes. Therefore, they are the most used wound gauze dressings. They can be used in several types of wounds for packing, scrubbing, covering, cleansing, and securing.

Gauze pads at HPFY are available in many forms, including gauze patches, sheets, strips, and rolls. Additionally, a gauze bandage comes in two forms - woven gauze and non-woven gauze.

Woven gauze has open and loose weaving, which makes absorption of exudate easy into the open loose fibers. It allows fluid to pass into more absorbent materials easily. This dressing gauze is available in fine and coarse meshes with varying threat counts. Where debridement is needed, the coarse variety is used. Fine meshes are preferred where the packing of a gauze wound is required to provide a sealed skin barrier for protection. Woven gauze is best used where higher absorbency levels or drainage is required.

Non-woven gauze is generally made of rayon, polyester, or a mix of the two and produces less lint, unlike the woven variety. It also leaves fewer fibers on the wound bed plus is softer and stronger than woven gauze. Non-woven gauze is more closely knit like a weave, which helps provide a stronger absorbency rate and efficient wicking of fluids. It is best used for extra strength or protection.

When to use gauze dressing?

A gauze dressing is the most commonly used and can be used in multiple types of wounds. These include:

Different Types of Gauze Pads

The different types of gauze wrap include:

There are several wound dressing types available in gauze. These include non-adherent gauze dressings, absorbent gauze bandages, petrolatum gauze dressings, island gauze dressings and low-adherent gauze dressings. You can also choose from sterile or non-sterile gauze, bordered gauze, and occlusive gauze pads.

How to change gauze wraps at home?

For the most part, one need not change the gauze tape all by oneself at home. However, everybody should know how to do the same. The process is very simple and does not require anything except a little precaution and diligence.

  1. To change your wound dressing, you need-
  2. Wash your hands properly and pat them dry before putting on the gloves.
  3. Remove the previous wound dressing very slowly and gently using saline water. You must be careful while doing so; you do not want to hamper the wound.
  4. Now clean the wound with utmost care. Wound cleaning is when the wound site is most prone to getting infected by germs. Therefore, cleaning it in the correct manner is essential. Use gauze pads and saline water to do the cleansing. Do it right after removing the used gauze bandage without any delay.
  5. Let the wound dry for a while (do not leave the wound open for too long).
  6. Time to put on the new dressing. Apply the antibiotic ointment first, and place the non-stick gauze over it. If you want, you can use extra gauze wrap to provide the wound enough cushioning.
  7. Use medical tape or wrap to secure the wound dressing. Make sure you secure the dressing in such a way that it does not make you uncomfortable after some time.

FAQ's

Frequently asked questions

Gauze wound dressings are dry, woven or non-woven sponges and wraps having varying degrees of absorbency, based upon the design. They are made of cotton, polyester or rayon. This wound dressing is available in sterile or non-sterile type with or without an adhesive border. Gauze dressings can be used for cleansing, packing and covering different types of wounds.

A gauze dressing helps heal wounds faster and prevent infection. It guards and cushions the wound, absorbs blood and other fluids. Further, it is used for applying ointments or rub cleansing fluids like rubbing alcohol on wounds. Gauze dressings are ideal for treating minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.

Sterile gauze dressings should be used instead of non-sterile ones for open wounds. These dressings act as a barrier in preventing contaminants from entering the wound area. Moreover, the sterile gauze will cover and absorb any fluid that is seeping out of the wound. However, non-sterile gauze dressings can be used for cushioning, cleaning as well as absorbing areas which involve lesser risks of getting infected.

Paraffin gauze dressings can be used over superficial wound burns, skin grafts and traumatic injuries. They are used in combination with appropriate secondary dressings. The application of such a wound dressing is directly over the contact layer and it soothes as well as protects the wound. Paraffin gauze dressings protect wounds from bacteria and other antibodies thus enhancing the healing procedure.
