Choosing the Right Medical Gloves

Powdered VS Powder-Free Gloves

In previous times, latex gloves were the most preferred choice of hand protection for medical professionals for having a powder coating on the surfaces to make them easier to put on and take off quickly. However, the powder is known to cause skin irritations, especially after prolonged use. It may also cause issues for respiratory problems if it’s accidentally inhaled. Fortunately, with constantly advancing times, disposable glove manufacturers have found ways to create gloves that are still easy to put on and take off without having the powder coating on them. These are primarily categorized as Nitrile or Vinyl gloves.

Choosing the Right Material (Nitrile vs. Latex)

Of all disposable gloves, latex gloves provide the highest level of comfort and flexibility; they also offer excellent protection against bacteria and viruses. Because of their high tactile sensitivity, these disposable latex gloves are preferred for precise or delicate work such as surgery.

However, if your skin is latex-sensitive, latex-free gloves are the option to go for. Of the various synthetic glove types available without latex, gloves made of nitrile are often preferred since disposable nitrile gloves provide relative comfort and protection to that of latex gloves. Nitrile gloves also provide a high level of security, with durable, puncture-resistant material that protects users from chemicals and viruses.

Vinyl plastic gloves, which are often less expensive than nitrile gloves but provide less protection, are another non-latex choice. They are great for housekeepers, gardeners, painters, and mechanics who choose a cost-effective synthetic glove that is comfortable and gives chemical protection.

Choosing the Color

Although it is thought that the colors are simply a matter of choice, on the contrary, numerous calculations go into choosing the color for disposable gloves.

Some prefer a clean-looking white disposable medical glove to easily spot contamination and avoid the risk of reactions caused by the dye in colored gloves.

Some choose pink disposable gloves to support breast cancer and research.

Others like black disposable gloves because they hide messes and create excellent color contrast when used with light-colored gloves. While punctures and tears must be detected quickly, such as when working with toxic substances in lab research, wearing black disposable gloves as the first layer underneath lighter gloves is recommended. Close alternatives include dark blue and purple medical gloves.

How Does the Thickness of Disposable Gloves Matter?

Choosing how thick latex or nitrile gloves should be - depends on the field of use. Glove thickness is often measured in mils or thousandths of an inch. While most types are very thin, thick disposable gloves may be utilized to eliminate moisture and contaminants that can build up on the skin.

Gloves that are 5 mil or less are preferably used in the medical industry and by caregivers to handle patients with incontinence problems. Other thicker gloves, however, allow use in other non-medical applications.

Materials also matter when it comes to thickness. For example, nitrile gloves are usually between 5 and 8 mil thickness. Certain professionals, particularly those in the tattoo and piercing fields, use 8 mil gloves. Some radiologists wear 18 mil gloves, which help prevent exposure to chemotherapy drugs or other harsh chemicals. These thicker gloves are often made of latex.
