How to use a Peak Flow Meter by Omron?

1. Remove the Peak Air meter from its packaging. PeakAir meter must be cleaned properly before your initial PEF trial and periodically thereafter.
2. Move the red marker (or red pointer) to the bottom of the numbered scale.
3. Make sure the mouthpiece is securely attached and gently open the handle on the meter. Hold the meter by the handle and do not obstruct the vents on either side of the mouthpiece or prevent the red marker from movement.
4. Take as deep a breath as possible and place the mouthpiece end into your mouth, making sure to form a tight seal with your lips. Do not put your tongue in the mouthpiece. Blow into the PeakAir meter as quickly and as hard as you can. Avoid long slow exhalation.
5. The red marker will move up the numbered scale. Write down the number next to the red marker. This is your Peak Expiratory Flow PER. Since each test session should consist of three PEF trials, repeat STEPS 1-5 twice more.
6. Remember to reset the pointer to the end of the slot nearest the mouthpiece before each trial. Write down the number next to the red marker for each test. The highest of the three numbers is your Peak Flow Number. Record this number in your log. DO NOT AVERAGE THE THREE TRIAL VALUES. Some patients may wish to rest for a few minutes between trials.
